During the Paleozoic era, the earth was covered in huge swamps filled with many gigantic plants and other organisms. These plants died in large quantities during a massive extinction event known as the great dying. The remains of these plants however remained underneath the soil. The heat and pressure from below the earth’s surface transformed the bodies of the plants into sediment which later formed coal.
At first the use of coal wasn’t widespread. People hadn’t fully realized the potential of coal. Romans began to extract coal in large quantities in the late 2cnd century. It was used to heat fires as well as other more casual uses. During the 13th and 14th centuries, coal started to be exported all over the United Kingdom. It was used in furnaces and other forms of domestic heating. As the general public started to understand more and more about coal, the demand for coal started to increase during the 16th century. Coal mines started to appear around the 17th century.\
The industrial revolution was when people had finally unlocked the true potential of coal. During the 19th century several advancements in technology were made. Coal was used in steam engines to power trains. Weapon factories began to use coal to manufacture weapons for the cold war. The 1880s were when coal started to actually be used to produce energy. Thomas Edison had invented the first ever coal-powered electric generator. The electricity generated by coal, powered homes and businesses. Coal power plants began to spread across Europe and parts of North America at the very beginning of the 20th century.
