Coal energy is not used often in Toronto due to the fact that many Torontonians believe fossil fuels are a hazard to the environment and cause air pollution. The city takes pride in offering other sources of energy. There is no major coal plant located in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Outside of the GTA in Ontario there are more coal plants. One particular power plant, known as the Nanticoke Generating Station, is the largest coal-fired power plant in North America.

It is estimated that Coal powers up to 24% of the energy in Canada and 46% the U.S. Much of our coal sold to the US. The oldest coal mines are present in Nova Scotia. This is the region where the Canadian coal industry first began within the 18th century. The biggest Canadian Coalmines are in Alberta. Alberta is rich with coal. There is approximately 33 billion tons of coal left to be mined in Alberta. Coal from Alberta has fewer toxins within it; therefore it is more eco friendly.

The top coal producers and consumers are China, the United States, and India. Coal can cause major harm to the environment, which is the reason why the air can be very polluted in places like India and China.
